A trip to Kauai (or any Hawaiian island) would not be complete without some beach days! There are many beautiful beaches on the island, but this is a list of our favorites. All with a variety of water conditions, sands, and facilities – this list will help you choose the best beaches to put on your list when you visit.
- Poipu Beach
Poipu Beach is arguably the best beach in the South. It is split into two bays consisting of Baby Beach, Kiahuna Beach, and of course Poipu Beach. You can snorkel, swim, and enjoy the Monk seals! There is a lifeguard on duty and many facilities including cafes, shower/bathroom, surf shop, and picnic benches. Be sure to check out Puka Dog for an amazing hot dog with unconventional toppings!
- Ha’ena Beach Park
This golden sand beach is perfect for water activities, surfing, camping, or relaxing. Swimming is permitted during the Summer, but water conditions can become dangerous in the Winter and is not suggested. There is a lifeguard on duty.
- Makua ‘Tunnels’ Beach
Tunnels Beach is one of the best snorkeling beaches on Kauai with coral reefs that line the ocean. There is a parking area with limited spaces so be sure to get there early if you want to find a spot. There is not always a lifeguard on duty, depending on the season.
- Hanalei Bay Beach
Hanalei Beach is one of the best beaches on Kauai, located on the North Shore. Backed by beautiful mountains and rivers, it makes for a spectacular sight. There are over 2 miles of sand and plenty of room to find a good spot to relax. There are reefs on both sides of the ocean and it makes for a great snorkeling spot. There is a lifeguard on duty.
- Polihale State Beach
This beach is a bit remote and a drive West, but it is beautiful and private with views of the NaPali cliffs and it is the longest beach in Kauai. Polihale is a must-see and is the perfect place to lounge on the sand or camp, but we do not recommend swimming or snorkeling there. There are no lifeguards or facilities. It is recommended to have a 4×4 car to visit Polihale. - Anini Beach
We recommend Anini Beach to lay out in the sun, read a good book, and relax. The water is calm and clear and the sand is white! There are showers, restrooms, and campgrounds (with permit) available. It is one of the best beaches for swimming and snorkeling. There is no lifeguard on duty.
When visiting the beaches, please be mindful and do not leave any trash or items behind. When choosing a sunscreen, please make sure it is reef-safe (it is the law in Hawaii). Check out our post for our recommended reef-safe sunscreens for the body and face.
Always check the weather and swimming conditions before visiting any beach, especially in the Winter, as the waters can become very dangerous. It is not safe to swim in some of the beaches during the high tide season. Kauai’s website details weather and ocean conditions, as well as more info to stay safe in the water.
