Kauai, nicknamed the Garden Isle, is the oldest Hawaiian Island and arguably the most green! Even though it is not as big as some of its sister islands, it is full of things to do. We have curated this list of some of our favorite things to do on Kauai.
- The Napali Coast.
The Napali Coast is one of the most stunning views on the whole island. You can view it by taking a hike, boat ride, or helicopter tour. I would recommend doing all 3 if you have the time and opportunity! The views are unreal and it is such a special experience.
- Waimea Canyon State Park.
Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, is a red mountainous canyon located on the Western side of the island. It is a long drive up to the canyon with a lot of viewpoints to stop at and hikes to do. If you get out to explore the canyon, please do not leave any trash behind or take from the canyon.
- Hiking.
There are a ton of hikes (link ton of hikes to a post dedicated to Kauai hikes) to do on Kauai varying in difficulty. For a more strenuous hike you can try the Kalalau Trail to the Napali Coast (even if you only do the first 2-4 miles), and an easier hike to try is the Kuilau Ridge Trail. It is a gorgeous green hike surrounded with spectacular views. Make sure to check out our post of the best Kauai hikes for more!
- Beaches.
Of course! How can you go to Hawaii and not visit the beaches? Hanalei Bay and Tunnels Beach are at the top of most lists! Be sure to check out our list of the best beaches on Kauai for more!
- Zipline.
Experience the beauty of Kauai while zipping on a line! There are a couple zipline excursions on the island, but this one is our favorite. It is an 8-track course in Koloa and lasts about 3 hours with amazing views of the forest and a reservoir.
- Kayak & Snorkel Tours.
A kayak/snorkel tour is a must while in Kauai! There are safe beaches to snorkel on your own, but it will not compare to a tour hosted by locals where you can also learn about the island. The Hanalei Bay Tour is our favorite and includes lunch, snorkel gear, kayak, and an instructional lesson. It is family-friendly and all levels of experience are welcome.
- Helicopter Tour.
In our opinion, the best way to see Kauai is from the sky in a helicopter. We experienced the most beautiful views and scenery that you are not able to see without doing a helicopter tour. It was the most incredible experience, and is also a great way to see the Napali Coast! There are a few different companies and options, from a private doors off tour to a group tour. The tour we took with Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours is highly recommended! If you aren’t scared of heights (or even if you are), we definitely recommend doing it with the doors off.
- Luaus.
When you picture Hawaii, you probably picture luaus as seen on tv! It is a great experience and if you have not ever been to one, we recommend going at least once. The Smith Family Garden and Lu’au Kalamaku are the most popular on the island.
- Scenic Drives.
It is highly recommended to rent a car while in Kauai to ensure you are able to see and do everything you want. You’ll experience gorgeous drives no matter where you are going. We recommended taking time to drive up to Waimea Canyon, through the Tree Tunnel in Koloa, up to Polihale Beach, or to Ke’e Beach.
- Kauai Museum.
Some people might not think to visit a museum while in Kauai, but if you’re interested in the history of the island then it is a must do! The museum is located in Lihue and the general admission is $15 that you pay inside the museum. It takes you through a story of the whole history of the Hawaiian Islands and Kauai and what early life looked like there. There are 2 buildings to explore, so be sure to ask the museum employees how to get around if you need to. We spent approximately 2 hours there and left appreciating the island even more!
Whether you are visiting Kauai solo, with a partner, or with family there are a ton of fun things to do in Kauai. In my opinion, it is the best of the Hawaiian Islands! Be sure to check out my other posts about Kauai for more ways to enjoy your vacation.
